Dr. Iosif Viorel (Vio) Onut, is co-Director of the uOttawa-IBM Cyber Range; Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa; Head of the Centre for Advanced Studies, IBM Canada Lab; and IBM Master Inventor at IBM Security.
Vio is passionate about product innovation acceleration through R&D done by collaboration between industry and academia. He has strong industry and academic experience, which makes him an ideal bridge between these two worlds. In the past decade, he has managed more than 150 research projects involving 35 universities, led by over 90 professors, over 360 students and 330 IBM staff. On a technical level, he specializes in cybersecurity and cyber crime. He has been in the security space for 20+ years in various technical, academic and management roles. He completed his Ph.D. at the Faculty of Computer Science, University of New Brunswick, specializing in application and network security topics. In recent years, he has turned his attention to analyzing phishing and scam attacks.
Throughout his career, he participated in many Research and Development collaborations with institutions such as DaimlerChrysler AG Research and Technology Center in Berlin, Germany; National Research Council of Canada, Institute for Information Technology, Fredericton, Canada; City of Fredericton, Network Infrastructure, Fredericton, Canada; Q1Labs, Boston, US; and finally, IBM, Ottawa, Canada. He has authored well over 45 peer-reviewed scientific articles and more than 60 patents.
